Guided Ice Climbs, Mixed Climbs & Winter Alpine Routes

Join us this winter for an adventure you’ll never forget! Courses are progressive and we offer something for every skill level. Join us at our New Paltz base camp where we will gear up and separate into ability groups. We will then be spirited by our Urban Sherpa coaches to various headwalls depending on weather and ice accumulation.

We provide all climbing equipment, including plastic boots, ice axes, crampons, and all climbing equipment.

Beginner, Intermediate, & Advanced Levels

Let us show you how to climb a frozen waterfall. The entire day is spent outside, progressing from low-angled slabs to vertical ice. You’ll learn what all that sharp pointy stuff is, how it works and most importantly how we do it safely. We’ll show you how to use the equipment, tie into and belay with the rope and get plenty of practice climbing. We’ll also touch on efficiency of movement, the qualities of the medium (the ice and the snow) and tips for staying warm.

Our intermediate ice climbing courses are tailored to meet your needs, whether you are a veteran looking to break through to Grade-5 ice or it’s your second day out and you’re looking for some fine-tuning. The emphasis is typically on technique, finesse and climbing efficiently to conserve energy (a vital aspect of winter climbing). Other components of the lesson may include assessment of conditions, anchor systems and multi-pitch climbing.

There are numerous world-class routes throughout the Northeast. For those who have already had a taste of climbing, those dream climbs will soon beckon: Pinnacle Gully, The Black Dike, Positive Thinking, Repentance, and so many others. We’re ready to make it happen for you. If you feel a given route may be somewhat beyond your abilities, consider a day of prior instruction to make sure you’re up to the challenge.
